Prices closed out July on a soft footing, as uncertainty loomed
with August’s arrival. All eyes were on Canada, and how S-P-F mills will
approach the market in the new month given a lower SLA export tax and a
favorable exchange rate. Buyers widely anticipated heavier shipments
from north of the border, while a hefty discount in September futures
compared to cash prices also weighed on the market. Softness was evident
in most framing lumber species, and the Random Lengths Framing Lumber
Composite Price fell $8.

Random Lengths Panel Market Report
Structural panel supplies continued to outpace demand, and downward
price pressure was unabated. Most OSB traders described sales as
steady to brisk across North America. Prices, however, continued to
erode in most markets. The Southern Pine plywood market continued to
grind lower with no sense of urgency from end users. Buyers’
hand-to-mouth purchases trailed mill output. Western Fir plywood
sales were a grind, despite more mills opening to counters. Prices
fell unevenly, and quotes spanned wide ranges.
