NEW FOREST MANAGEMENT CONCEPT - 16/05/2002

USA: A new concept for managing indigenous forests was introduced yesterday at World of Wood, the International Wood Products Association's 46th Annual Convention in California. Keynote speaker Dr Richard Rice, of Conservation International, spoke about "conservation concessions". In which local resource owners and users are compensated for conservation. He reported on a project in Guyana where Conservation International leased a large area of forest from the Government at the market rate for timber concessions, to conserve biological diversity rather than extract timber. As with any business arrangement, the terms of conservation concessions are subject to negotiation, Rice says. Concessions can be a regular and successful process for sustainable management and production of forests, and industry should get involved to influence decisions on resource use.
