Furniture Manufacturers Asked to Use Combined Materials

European buyers seek more furniture with combined materials, including a combination of wood and metal, rather than that merely with solid wood, says Chairman of Central Java¡¯s board of Indonesian Furniture Industry & Handicraft Association (ASMINDO) Yakub Firdaus.

This observation on the latest trend of furniture sought by European buyers was made by 25 Central Java¡¯s furniture makers who visited Spoga fair in Cologne, Germany, last September. The manufacturers were also able to visit their customers in the Netherlands.

Though accompanied by government¡¯s officials from the Department of Industry and Trade as well as from the Coordinating Board for Investment, Firdaus said that those manufacturers conducted the trip on their own expenses.

Speaking about the latest trend in Europe, Firdaus said that most of the buyers seek furniture products that are environmentally friendly. Under this trend, the use of wood in a product is reduced by up to 50%, while the rest is made of other kind of materials, including metal, rattan and even synthetic rattan.

¡°The trend is heading for more products with combined materials. Buyers are seeking products with less wood. Thus I appeal to domestic manufacturers to start making design in which they use combined materials,¡± Firdaus says.
