| China bans export of charcoal As
of August 1, China prohibited the export of charcoal. One third of the charcoal Japan
consumes came from China and about 70% of this was so called "hard charcoal"
used mainly for cooking yakitori and eel in Japanese restaurants. The inventory of hard
charcoal in Japan is said to be only enough for one month. China acted on charcoal
production for export as part of its forest conservation and log harvest restrictions.
Japan's annual consumption of charcoal is about 160,000 ton of which 63,000 tonnes is from
domestic sources and 57,000 tonnes are from China.. |
