Germany Pellet price increases slightly in July 2023
[Jul 18, 2023]

Berlin - In July, the price of wood pellets rose slightly. According to the German Pellet Institute (DEPI), one ton costs an average of 422.51 euros. That is 3.5 percent more than in the previous month.

At almost 16.8 percent, the price is well below the previous year's level. The price development, which is atypical for the time of year, goes hand in hand with increased raw material prices due to the restraint in the construction industry. As a result, sawmills are not working at full capacity. A kilowatt hour of heat from pellets is available for 8.45 cents. There is still a price advantage of just under 7 percent compared to heating oil and around 30 percent compared to natural gas.

"Before the pellet store is refilled in summer, it should be completely emptied and cleaned if necessary," explains Martin Bentele, Managing Director of DEPI. According to the ENplus quality certification, fines should be removed from the store every two years to ensure optimal storage of the pellets and trouble-free operation during the heating period.

Regional prices

The regional differences in the price of pellets in July 2023 are as follows (sales of 6 t): In southern Germany, pellets cost an average of 420.15 euros/t, closely followed by the middle of the republic at 423.36 euros/t. In northern and eastern Germany, pellets are slightly more expensive at EUR 431.10/t. The fact that the national average value in July is below the value of the regional prices is based on the calculation method.

Larger quantities (26 t) will be traded in July 2023 at the following conditions: South: 403.67 euros/t, Central: 407.46 euros/t, North/East: 419.76 euros/t (all incl. VAT) .

DEPI pellet price

The DEPI pellet price has been published monthly since 2011, until December 2020 by the German Energy Wood and Pellet Association (DEPV). It describes the average price in Germany for a tonne of ENplus A1 quality class pellets for the respective purchase quantity (delivery within a 50 km radius, including all ancillary costs and VAT) – throughout Germany and in three regions. A DEPV pellet price for delivery contracts (net) can be called up at DEPV.
