High-quality wood from Saxony is expensive
The highest timber revenue per cubic meter this year was
achieved by an English oak belonging to a private forest owner
in the Leipzig forest district. A veneer manufacturer from the
Netherlands purchased the 71-centimeter-thick and 4.0-meter-long
trunk for a total of €3,179 (€2,012 per cubic meter).
Sachsenforst provides information on the results of the 27th
Saxon sawmill and timber auction in 2026
Valuable trees from private, municipal, church, and state
forests in Saxony fetch high prices on the timber market: At the
27th sawmill and timber auction—an auction based on written
bids—397 high-quality logs from a total of 40 Saxon companies
from private, municipal, church, and state forest holdings were
sold. Demand is very high: interested parties from all over
Germany and neighboring countries came to the auction site in
the Dresden Heath. The logs will now be processed into
high-quality and durable wood products.
The valuable logs from the auction continue to be in high demand
in the timber industry. This year's auction achieved an average
price of €615 per cubic meter of wood. Thomas Rother, Head of
Forestry Operations at Sachsenforst: “It can take up to 150
years before the trees can be offered for sale at auction. This
requires patience and perseverance across generations on the
part of the respective forest owners. The good prices are a
reward for many years of caring for the trees, especially by
previous generations.”

Results overview
Individual logs from 17 different tree species were offered at
this year's tender. Pedunculate oak and sessile oak (435 cubic
meters), red oak (67 cubic meters), and ash (38 cubic meters)
contributed significantly to the total volume of over 700 cubic
meters of valuable timber offered. Spruce (56 cubic meters) and
larch (44 cubic meters) dominated the coniferous timber. In
contrast to previous years, more than half of the quantity
offered was supplied from the Saxon state forest. The other half
of the quantity offered was provided by private forest (39%),
municipal forest (5%) and church forest operations (4%). The
reason for the decline in deliveries from non-state forests,
especially private forests, is the uncertainty surrounding the
EU regulation on deforestation-free supply chains. This is due
to come into effect on December 30, 2025, and requires forest
owners who wish to sell their timber to provide a so-called due
diligence declaration. Sachsenforst submitted its due diligence
declaration in fall 2025.
Compared to the previous year (508 euros per cubic meter), the
average revenue per cubic meter rose by approximately 21 percent
to 615 euros per cubic meter. This is attributable to the
significant price increase for oak (+14 percent) compared to the
previous year. The sycamore trunks on offer were sold for 338
euros per cubic meter. Red oak also achieved a good average
price of €252 per cubic meter. Ash achieved an average price of
€283 per cubic meter. The highest quality spruce wood sold for
€214 per cubic meter. Larch wood sold for an average of €300 per
cubic meter. Fifty-seven logs did not find a buyer at the
auction.
