Despite today’s large stockpiles of storm-damaged timber, there
is a risk of a future timber shortage in southern Sweden,
according to Danske Bank’s report *Forest & Economy*. The
warning comes at a time when several sawmills are under pressure
due to weak profitability and capacity cuts.
The large volumes of timber resulting from Storm Johannes are
still flooding the market. According to Danske Bank, the influx
of new timber is likely to decline once inventories have been
depleted.
In its latest “Forest & Economy” report, the bank points to a
sharp drop in logging notifications in Götaland. During the
first quarter of the year, levels were 49 percent lower than
during the corresponding period last year and 39 percent below
the average for the 2022–2026 period.
