Construction activity in Germany remained broadly stable in
April 2026, with new orders showing no change compared to the
previous month, according to the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).
Real, price-adjusted orders were flat month-on-month after
seasonal and calendar adjustments. However, performance across
segments varied significantly, with building construction
declining by 6.7% while civil engineering recorded growth of
6.5%.
Over the three-month period from February to April 2026, overall
order intake rose slightly by 0.4% compared to the previous
quarter, driven by gains in building construction, which offset
a weaker performance in civil engineering.
Year-on-year comparisons show modest growth, with total
construction orders increasing by 0.6% compared to April 2025.
Civil engineering again outperformed, rising by 7.4%, while
building construction fell by 6.5%.
Construction output also strengthened, with real sales up 3.6%
year-on-year and employment in the sector increasing by 1.4% to
around 545,000 workers in companies with 20 or more employees.
The data points to a stabilising construction environment,
supported by resilient infrastructure demand, even as
residential and non-residential building activity remains under
pressure.
