| Trading in framing lumber markets
picked up in the middle of the week. Mills firmed quotes and kicked
prices unevenly higher. Many buyers who had pulled back from the market
the previous two weeks were forced back in to replenish run-down
inventories. Those buyers looking for late-year discounts to emerge, or
to place orders closer to year-end to ensure delivery in January, were
disappointed. Buying picked up as early as Tuesday, and sales ranged
from slightly improved to frenetic by Thursday.

Panel market
Structural panel markets were lethargic. Sales of OSB were subdued.
Manufacturers closely watched production levels to avoid making more
than they could sell. Southern Pine plywood producers took a variety of
approaches to sell as the holidays approached, resulting in
wider-than-normal price ranges on many sheathing items. Western Fir
plywood traders exhibited a relaxed temperament despite a sluggish sales
pace. Holiday and maintenance shutdowns allowed several mills to quote
for January shipment.
