| Despite tough winter weather in
key consuming regions, and the absence of many traders due to the
holidays, framing lumber trading closed out 2010 on a
stronger-than-expected pace. Prices were mostly firm to higher in all
species. A few exceptions were noted, as mills let a few prices trail
the upward trend to move volumes before year-end. Gains far outnumbered
losses, as the Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price rose $5, to
$293. Scaled-back production left many items difficult to source.

Panel market
Trends in structural panels were mixed. OSB sales showed more spark
than most traders had anticipated. Some speculated that memories of last
year's first-quarter run-up remained fresh, prompting buyers to seek
additional coverage. Southern Pine plywood mills nudged rated sheathing
prices upward amid steady sales. Storms in the Northeast cast a pall
over a western Fir plywood market that was already sluggish. Many
traders were out of their offices for part, if not all of the week.
