| Framing lumber sales were spotty
in early trading, but the pace picked up Wednesday and quickened on
Thursday with news of offshore sales and a limit-up move in futures.
Mild temperatures were a key factor in increased sales in parts of the
Midwest and the south-central states. In early trading, prices were
adrift, with some mills discounting to move prompt offerings. The Random
Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price slipped $2, but most framing
prices finished the week on a firm footing.

Panel market
Structural panel prices shifted erratically, mostly to the downside.
Traders hoped that better action in markets for lumber and veneered
panels would carry over into OSB -- but that's not how the week worked
out. Mill order files eroded and so did prices. Trading in Southern Pine
rated sheathing heated up Wednesday and Thursday, but it took hefty
discounting by several producers to pull in buyers. Amid thinning order
files, a couple of western Fir plywood mills aggressively discounted
prices at midweek to spur sales.
