| A slow start to the week tipped or
threatened to tip many framing lumber price trends over to the downside.
However, a surge in futures on word that China had placed another large
order with Canadian mills sent wholesalers scrambling into the cash
market to cover shorts, while distributors also stepped in for near-term
needs. By Thursday, most traders had concluded that the talk of China
business was merely a rumor. But the rumor's half-day impact was
undeniable.

Panel market
Structural panel trading stalled. OSB sales dragged, and buyers turned
more bearish. Snow and cold weather caught much of the blame for the
slowdown at all levels of the distribution pipeline. Another week of
slow sales left most prices of Southern Pine plywood unchanged, but
producers watched order files shrink. The cumulative effects of weather
stifled the flow of western Fir plywood through the supply chain. Mills
neared the end of their order files, and some lowered quotes sharply at
midweek.
