| The disaster in Japan distracted
traders across North America. Concrete facts with regard to demand for
wood products were lacking, as the focus in the week-old tragedy
remained on the humanitarian crisis and threats posed by damaged
nuclear reactors. Some orders for Japan were reported, albeit mostly
by those suppliers who have established relationships with Japanese
importers. Domestic markets were slow but steady; prices were flat or
moved modestly in either direction.

Sales to Japan, and speculation about future demand from that
country, was the main catalyst in structural panel markets. Caution
prevailed in OSB as traders assessed the impact of some mills selling
more of their output to Japan. Action in other structural panel
markets was slow to spill into the Southern Pine plywood market.
However, sales picked up in the second half of the week. The disaster
in Japan spurred western Fir plywood sales, mostly starting Wednesday,
which led to double-digit price increases in sheathing.
