| Sales of framing lumber were
measured across North America, and price trends covered the gamut. Gains
were scattered and minimal, while many prices drifted sideways. Weakness
was most pronounced in Southern Pine; producers opened to larger
counters as month- and quarter-end pressure mounted. Producers in
Western Canada and the western U.S. were buoyed by offshore sales, but
some key prices slipped. The Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite
Price edged down for a second straight week.

Plywood was the best performer in
structural panel markets. OSB trading was quiet, but prices maintained a
slight upward push in some regions. Weather was a constraint on sales
across parts of the Midwest, the Northeast, and in California. In
Southern Pine plywood, trading of rated sheathing shook off a sluggish
start and kicked into gear Wednesday and Thursday. Participation was
widespread. Last week's Japan-related surge of activity maintained
momentum in western Fir plywood. Domestic buyers came off the fence
inconsistently.
