| Price trends in framing lumber markets were mixed. Southern Pine
maintained a faster sales pace, but trading elsewhere slowed as buyers
paused to digest recent purchases and more troubling global financial
news, including Thursday¡¯s stock market plunge. The onset of autumn
added impetus for dealers to ratchet inventories down from what were
in many cases already low levels. Due to gains in SYP, the Random
Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price increased for a fourth straight
week.

Plywood remained the focal point of structural panel markets, although
the price increases paled in comparison to the previous week. In
Southern Pine plywood, order files stretched well into October.
Producers kept upward pressure on quotes, although many had pulled off
the market by Friday. Reported prices of sheathing increased as much
as $20. In western Fir plywood, lean inventories spurred continued
purchasing from mills and secondaries. The reported price of 1/2-inch
4-ply sheathing reached its 2011 year-to-date high. Sales of OSB were
quiet, and prices finished flat to down.
