| Framing lumber traders welcomed a late-week shot of sales that
put many prices on firmer footing. Short covering and modest long
positions got the ball rolling in Western Canada, and that action
reverberated across the Coast and Inland regions of the U.S. The
firming prices sparked more interest from dealers who needed to cover
late-fall business. The trend was different in the South, where prices
posted modest increases early only to level off by Thursday. Market
fundamentals remained weak across the U.S.

Structural panel markets lacked energy. Retailers stuck to fill-in
purchases of OSB, while secondaries avoided taking positions. Price
trends were mixed. Action was best in the North. Most Southern Pine
plywood producers let a quiet week of sales slide by without changing
their quotes on rated sheathing. Several pushed sanded prices higher
by $10 or more. The western Fir plywood market lost momentum. Modest
field activity seldom worked its way back to mills, several of which
ran up against order files.
