U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 44 2011

Trading of framing lumber remained stymied by seasonal changes and weak economic signals emanating from the U.S. and abroad. Prices softened in many species, although curtailments in the West stemmed some of this downward pressure. This was most evident in green Fir, which posted modest price gains in the narrow widths. Southern Pine producers also took firmer approaches amid recent curtailments and the start of a new month. On balance, however, weakness outweighed strength.

Structural panel markets floundered. Slack demand at the retail level led some OSB mills to dial back production, and reports of mills taking unannounced downtime circulated widely. Trading in Southern Pine plywood was similar to last week's sloppy and inconsistent market. Rated sheathing prices again covered unusually wide ranges, with some blocks moving on double-digit counters. Western Fir producers fell back on modest order files, approaching curtailments, and long-term contracts as they held prices.
