U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 49 2011

Sales of framing lumber were measured as buyers worked from lean inventories but took two distinct approaches to the market. Some sought highly specified loads that could ship quickly, while others wanted shipment later in the month to ensure delivery in the new year. Price trends were flat to mildly mixed. Western producers were supported by order files and some fielded better-than-expected demand, while slowness softened Southern Pine prices, especially on the westside.

Structural panel trading faded. With many buyers having already covered their requirements through the holidays, action in OSB markets across the continent was sleepy. Demand for Southern Pine sheathing grew quieter as the week progressed, and more producers' order files reached the week of December 26 or beyond. Weather in the Northeast, and to a lesser degree elsewhere, remained a steadying factor in the western Fir plywood market. Buyers checked on earlier orders anxiously and filled inventory gaps readily.
