| The pace that got the new year off to a fast start the previous
week eased. But most framing lumber prices remained firm, and gainers
far outnumbered any losers for the week. Southern Pine led the way, as
buyers continued to replenish after holding back through year-end to
limit inventory taxes. Treaters were also a factor in pushing many #2
prices up by double digits. Mild weather continued to drive
consumption. But snow moved into the Midwest and the Northeast late in
the week, a factor quelling the tone in S-P-F and western species

Structural panel prices gained amid mixed trends in trading. OSB
prices continued to push upward, in some cases strongly. A few items
hit their highest levels in about a year. Activity in Southern Pine
plywood shifted to the secondary level of the market, following last
week's surge in sales at the mill level. Prices were sharply higher in
all grades, except siding. Western Fir sales slowed considerably from
last week, yet maintained a strong pace given the time of year.
