U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 13 2012

Softness crept into framing lumber prices and pushed buyers to the sidelines to see how the month- and quarter-end shake out. The stronger-than-expected pace of the first quarter and the oft-heard narrative that field inventories remained thin left many traders believing that their customers could not hold out long. But the concern that the mild winter had borrowed from second-quarter sales hung over the market as well. The Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price dropped $3.

Lackluster demand subdued structural panel sales. Another quiet week of trading left OSB prices all over the map. Some mills remained on the sidelines, leaning on order files and spurning all counters. Others were open to mild discounts. Pricing among Southern Pine plywood producers was messy, as some plants pushed output into the market to move order files out an additional week. Buyer uncertainty about market direction left western Fir plywood sales quiet.
