U.S.: Lumber and panel market report ---- Week 30 2012

Trading in framing lumber was more deliberate than the previous two weeks, but still active enough to push many prices higher. Producers holding order files of about two weeks were a key reason for buyers to pause and digest recent purchases. Sweltering heat also slowed consumption, and a slump in futures was a factor in some traders taking a more guarded approach, despite the close of the current contract out into mid-September. The Random Lengths Framing Lumber Composite Price gained $5, to $327.

Structural panel sales surged and prices posted sharp gains. A shot of business Thursday and follow-through Friday morning, bolstered OSB mill order files and lifted prices. The market's move frustrated dealers and contractors who had been hoping to see prices adjust downward. Southern Pine plywood sales kicked into gear early and gained momentum throughout the week. Wholesalers were among the key drivers. Western Fir sheathing and underlayment prices posted double-digit increases for the first time since June.
